Biography
Stephanie E. Lewis is a Partner in the Greenville, South Carolina office of Jackson Lewis LLP where she practices in the area of labor and employment law. She represents employers in all aspects of employment law before state and federal agencies and courts, including Title VII discrimination and sexual harassment claims, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, wrongful termination, and breach of handbook claims. She regularly advises clients in connection with employee terminations, disciplinary actions, policy implementation and investigations and assists clients in drafting policies, handbooks, contracts, and other employment topics. She also regularly conducts employee training and provides counsel on employment-related audits. A member of the South Carolina Bar, Ms. Lewis is admitted to practice before the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. She is a member of the American Bar Association, the Charleston County Bar Association and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association. Ms. Lewis served on the Executive Board of Directors for the Charleston County Bar from 2005-2007 and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Crisis Ministries and United Ministries. She is a co-founder of the Crisis Ministries Legal Clinic. In 2006-2007, Ms. Lewis was an adjunct Legal Research and Writing professor at the Charleston School of Law. Ms. Lewis was the recipient of the 2006 South Carolina Bar Pro Bono Lawyer award. From 2002-04, Ms. Lewis served as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Patrick Michael Duffy of the District of South Carolina. From 2000-02, she was a law clerk for U.S. Judge Karen Johnson Williams of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2000, Ms. Lewis earned a Juris Doctor, with High Honors, from the University of North Carolina School of Law where she was named to the Order of the Coif, served as Articles Editor of the North Carolina Law Review, and received the James E. and Carolyn B. Davis Award for Character and Service. As a law student, she served as student coordinator of the Pro Bono Program, was president of the Community Legal Project and received the Gressman-Pollitt Award for Best Oral Argument. In 1997, Ms. Lewis earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, magna cum laude, from North Carolina State University. Ms. Lewis is the author of the following publications: Inside the Judge’s Chambers: A Profile of Judge P. Michael Duffy, District Court Judge For The United States District Court For The District of South Carolina, The South Carolina Defense Line (Spring 2006): Campbell v. Louisiana: Rethinking Access and Remedy for Claims of Discrimination in Jury Selection, 77 N.C. L. . Rev. 1557 (1999); and O’Brien v. O’Brien: The Changing Nature of Property Distribution in North Carolina, 77 N.C. L. Rev. 2280 (1999). She is currently co-authoring an article entitled, Muddying The Waters: The Work of Walking and Waiting, concerning the Supreme Court’s Fair Labor Standards Act decision in IBP, Inc. v. Alvarez, Op. No. 03-1238 (S.Ct. Nov. 8, 2005).
