Jackson Lewis Supports ABA Resolution 113 “Promoting Diversity in the Legal Profession”

WHITE PLAINS, NY (February 3, 2017) Jackson Lewis P.C., one of the country’s preeminent workplace law firms, proudly pledges its support of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Resolution 113, which urges law firms to expand and create opportunities at all levels of responsibility for diverse attorneys, and implores clients to direct a greater percentage of the legal services they purchase to diverse attorneys.

As part of the firm’s pledge, Jackson Lewis is pleased to respond to the uniform Survey created by the ABA and help bring increased focus and urgency to the organization’s call for action. The Survey, intended to create consistency and transparency of data, will collect diversity data from law firms in a number of areas, including equity partnership, leadership positions, associates, hiring, attrition and compensation.

“This is an incredibly significant joint effort by law firms and corporate America, and we are proud to join the ABA and our many clients who have pledged their support to the ABA’s mission to diversify the legal profession,” said Firm Chairman Vincent A. Cino.  “Jackson Lewis strives to create and maintain a firm-wide inclusive environment that gives all our talented attorneys the opportunity to flourish, and the achievement of diverse attorneys within our firm has been a key to our growth and success."

Jackson Lewis’ Diversity Committee, Chaired by Washington, D.C. Region Principal Weldon H. Latham, who also leads the firm’s Corporate Diversity Counseling Practice Group, oversees firm-wide diversity and inclusion efforts, including five Attorney Resource Groups that help to ensure vital areas are addressed and provide leadership opportunities for diverse attorneys.  Each Resource Group addresses mentoring, business development opportunities, client service initiatives, pro bono activities and recruiting to ensure all attorneys at the firm are provided with opportunities to ensure they are well-situated to develop as leaders within the firm as well as the legal profession.

“It is well-established that a diverse workforce is a stronger, more productive workforce, and the recruitment and advancement of diverse employees starts from the top of an organization,” said Mr. Latham. “I applaud the ABA’s efforts to ensure legal service providers are creating and maintaining inclusive cultures, and I am proud to pledge Jackson Lewis’ commitment to continuing to remove barriers in the legal profession and create new opportunities that allow diverse attorneys to thrive within our firm.”
