Larry Shulman defends employers and management in white-collar criminal matters, governmental investigations and hearings, and complex civil litigation involving allegations of misconduct. He is a member of the firm’s Corporate Governance and Internal Investigations and Class Actions and Complex Litigation practice groups.
A former prosecutor, Mr. Shulman brings a wealth of knowledge to the defense of RICO, Fraud, Federal False Claims Act, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, Sarbanes-Oxley, OSHA and Labor-Management Reporting matters. Additionally, he conducts internal investigations on behalf of employers, and consults on preventative strategies, including the establishment and implementation of corporate codes of conduct. He has a particular interest in the intersection of criminal law, regulatory actions, and workplace issues, given the recent and dramatic increase in the number of laws affecting employers that carry significant criminal and civil penalty provisions.
A veteran trial lawyer, Mr. Shulman has tried more than 215 cases to jury verdict. He is AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell, having received a peer review rating of “preeminent”, and was named to the 2010, 2011 and 2012 lists of the Top Lawyers in Metro Detroit by dBusiness magazine.
Prior to re-entering private practice in 2001, Mr. Shulman served for seven years in the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit. As a prosecutor, he was a member of the elite Special Crimes Section, which prosecuted a variety of high profile and highly complex criminal offenses, including criminal organizations, economic crimes and public corruption. He was regularly invited to teach trial advocacy to prosecutors, and served on the teaching faculty of the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan.
He is a member of the litigation, labor and employment, and criminal law sections of the State Bar of Michigan, and currently serves as an appointed member of the State Bar’s Standing Committee on Criminal Jury Instructions. He is also a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the First Amendment Lawyers Association and the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan.
Mr. Shulman earned his B.A. from the University of Michigan and his J.D from Wayne State University. He is admitted to practice in Michigan, in the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, and in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He has also been admitted pro hac vice in Florida, Arizona, Minnesota and Alabama.
