The Adjunct Faculty “Metro Organizing” Campaign Has Arrived in Chicago. What Do You Do Now?

Past Event Detail

April 27, 2016
8:00 AM - 10:00 AM CST
Jackson Lewis P.C.
150 N. Michigan Avenue
Chicago, IL 60601

Join Jackson Lewis’ national Higher Education Industry Group and its Chicago Office, along with featured speaker Michael Bertoncini, for an interactive discussion covering all you need to know now that the Service Employees International Union’s (SEIU) has targeted Chicago as the next stop in its “metro organizing campaign.”

Adjunct faculty at University of Chicago and Loyola University Chicago recently voted to be represented by SEIU.  These SEIU victories follow the Chicago City Council’s unanimous resolution supporting adjunct faculty organizing and a recent SEIU symposium held for adjuncts from 19 Chicagoland colleges and universities to discuss unionization.  SEIU employed similar tactics at past stops in the “metro organizing campaign” to quickly win adjunct faculty union elections at six private universities in Boston and two community colleges in St. Louis.

Attendees will learn effective strategies and lessons learned from recent SEIU adjunct faculty campaigns and will have the opportunity to discuss issues with Mr. Bertoncini, who has extensive experience advising and negotiating with the SEIU on behalf of colleges and universities across the country. Discussion topics include:

  • Strategies for dealing with every stage of adjunct faculty organizing, including pre-organizing drive, the union campaign, and collective bargaining
  • The unique aspects of adjunct faculty organizing in the academic setting
  • SEIU organizing tactics and related challenges
  • Assessing how your institution fares in response to SEIU campaign promises and attacks
  • Benefits and advantages of proactively addressing adjunct faculty concerns
  • Effective communications strategies for responding to adjunct faculty organizing activity
  • Campaign promises versus results – evaluating SEIU’s achievements to date
  • Developing a strategy for bargaining a first adjunct faculty contract with SEIU
