The Department of Labor administers and investigates employee complaints received under 22 federal whistleblower laws.  These whistleblower laws prohibit employers from discriminating or retaliating against their employees for exercising their rights under the law and they can have an impact on nearly every industry. 

Under these whistleblower laws, the DOL will investigate all employee complaints regarding worker safety and health, environmental and nuclear safety, transportation safety, and consumer and investor protection.  The DOL received and investigated over 3,000 whistleblower complaints in 2013 alone and the numbers are expected to increase in the years to come.
