NLRB Election Update: SEIU Defeated at Maine Medical Center

  • October 1, 2000

On September 14, 2000, the National Labor Relations Board conducted a secret ballot election among Maine Medical Center's (Portland, Maine) more than 1,200 non-supervisory registered nurses. We are pleased to report that the nurses voted against SEIU representation, 622 to 509. In support of its massive organizing attempt, which had begun several months earlier, SEIU established an office in Portland and recruited professional organizers from throughout the United States. SEIU had hoped to use a victory to establish an SEIU foothold in northern New England.
