Jackson Lewis Adds Two Attorneys in Portland

PORTLAND, OR (December 4, 2012) – Jackson Lewis LLP, one of the country’s largest and fastest-growing workplace law firms, is pleased to announce the addition of two attorneys to its growing Portland office. Sarah J. Ryan and Yael A. Livny, formerly with Ball Janik LLP, have joined the firm as Partner and Associate, respectively.

“We are excited to welcome Sarah and Yael to the Jackson Lewis team,” said Scott Oborne, Managing Partner of the Portland office. “Both attorneys have valuable litigation and counseling experience that will enhance the services we provide to our clients.  We are pleased to be able to attract such esteemed, knowledgeable lawyers as we continue to build upon our capabilities throughout Oregon.”

Sarah Ryan, who chaired Ball Janik’s Labor and Employment group before joining Jackson Lewis, has been in private practice in Portland for over 25 years.  Her main areas of practice are employment law and complex commercial litigation.  Ms. Ryan has advised clients and litigated employment claims regarding harassment, discrimination and retaliation, intellectual property protection, wage and hour, breach of contract, and many other workplace law issues.  She is also a frequently-retained speaker on employment topics, including claims avoidance, reductions-in-force, and legally-mandated leaves.

Ms. Ryan, who has been recognized by her peers as an industry leader in labor and employment by Chambers USA and maintains the AV® Preeminent™ Rating from Martindale-Hubbell®, is a founding director of Oregon Lawyers Against Hunger and served as general counsel to the Portland Human Resource Management Association (PHRMA).   She formerly served on the Board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oregon and currently serves on the Board of the Multnomah Bar Foundation.  Ms. Ryan is admitted to practice in Oregon, the District of Columbia, and Washington.  She is also admitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.  She received her B.A. from the University of Nebraska and her J.D. from the University of Oregon.

Yael Livny’s practice focuses on labor and employment law and litigation.  She frequently counsels clients on a broad range of labor and employment matters and defends employers in claims involving breach of contract, discrimination, harassment,  and other workplace grievances.  Before joining Ball Janik in 2010, Ms. Livny held associate positions at the Washington, D.C. offices of both Cooley LLP and Fried Frank Harris Shriver Jacobson LLP, where she focused on employment and labor law as well as business litigation and internal investigations and monitoring.

Ms. Livny is admitted to practice in Oregon, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.  She received her B.A., with honors, from the University of Montana, after which she was awarded a U.S. Fulbright scholarship to study comparative literature for one year in Berlin, Germany.  She earned her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law where she received the American Jurisprudence Award in Evidence Advocacy.
