Ana C. Shields Honored as One of the Top 50 Most Influential Women in Business

MELVILLE, NY (September 26, 2019) Jackson Lewis P.C., one of the country’s preeminent workplace law firms, is pleased to announce Principal Ana C. Shields has been recognized as one of the “Top 50 Most Influential Women in Business” by Long Island Business News. The list recognizes the most dynamic and influential women who have demonstrated leadership in their chosen career though mentoring and community involvement.

“Ana is a talented attorney who has made a noteworthy commitment to helping others in the legal profession,” said Christopher M. Valentino, Long Island Office Managing Principal. “She serves as a valuable mentor to junior attorneys within the firm and prides herself on providing clients with top-notch client service. Ana is a respected resource for local Long Island and large national businesses, and we congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition.”

Ms. Shields is a Principal in the Long Island, New York office of Jackson Lewis P.C. For nearly 15 years, she has practiced exclusively in employment law and has been involved in proceedings before federal and state courts, the American Arbitration Association and administrative agencies. In addition to her national employment practice, Ms. Shields has developed close ties with the Long Island business community, helping its business leaders to mitigate risk, prevent litigation and to successfully defend claims.

Ms. Shields has significant experience litigating employment related disputes including the defense of claims alleging sex harassment, discrimination, retaliation, pay equity and other alleged violations of employment laws. She works closely with clients through all phases of litigation including investigations, discovery, depositions, trials and arbitration. Her experience extends to proceedings before federal and state courts, the American Arbitration Association, JAMS and government administrative agencies.

Ms. Shields frequently conducts anti-harassment training for managers and supervisory level employees to prevent sexual harassment and other forms of harassment and discrimination in the workplace, and to comply with New York State’s recent amendment to its anti-harassment laws. While such training only recently was mandated by New York State, Ms. Shields has been leading this training regularly for many years as part of her ongoing efforts to help the firm’s clients to mitigate risk and to prevent claims.

In addition to her litigation practice, Ms. Shields regularly advises clients regarding compliance with various federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the workplace including Title VII, the Equal Pay Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and related New York State and City labor laws. She extensively reviews policies and provides clients guidance with respect to effective workplace solutions for employee relations issues as they arise to ensure compliance with these laws.

Ms. Shields actively contributes to the human resources business leader community on Long Island. She is a regular speaker at the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Long Island chapter’s monthly meetings, providing a “Legal Update” regarding new developments in labor and employment law. Additionally, Ms. Shields serves as the Co-Chair of SHRM Long Island’s Professional Development Committee and works closely with SHRM-Long Island’s Certification Committee to assist in its “study group” as future HR business leaders work toward achieving their SHRM and HRCI certifications.

Ms. Shields earned her J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law and her A.B. cum laude from Harvard University.
