Jackson Lewis Lasers in on Upskilling; Firm Hosts Inaugural Advanced Trial Techniques Academy

NEW YORK, NY (July 2, 2019) Jackson Lewis P.C., one of the country’s preeminent workplace law firms, recently held the firm’s inaugural Advanced Trial Techniques Academy, a two-day interactive workshop offered to the JL Trial Team, Jackson Lewis’ most experienced trial attorneys, to help them further enhance and refine their courtroom skills.

The program featured National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) style sessions and topics taught by experienced litigators, judges and industry experts on subjects including Courtroom Technology; Storytelling and Effective Oral Presentation; Advanced Trial Strategy and Techniques; Lessons from the Bench; Creating Effective and Persuasive Demonstratives; Jury Psychology; and Voir Dire. Sessions were presented by outside faculty including a retired Chief Judge, law school professors, NITA trainers and trial technology consultants, along with several highly experienced Jackson Lewis trial attorneys, including Chairman Emeritus Vincent A. Cino, who has litigated every conceivable type of employment action throughout the U.S. and lectured extensively on trial advocacy.

"Our goal is for the highly skilled attorneys that comprise the JL Trial Team to be fully equipped to assist with trials all over the country, which means ensuring they are exposed to regular training, development and advanced trial technologies,” said Nadine C. Abrahams and John M. Nolan, Co-Leaders of Jackson Lewis’ General Employment Litigation Practice Group. “Through presentations from top-notch faculty on subjects including jury selection, trial technology and trends in plaintiff’s tactics, the Academy helped participants hone skills in witness examination, persuasive argument and effective storytelling, some of the most important components of successful trial preparation and conduct."

"The feedback we’ve received from attendees and faculty has been incredible, and we are working on developing even more training programs for our JL Trial Team as well as the ‘next generation’ of Jackson Lewis trial attorneys,” added Abrahams and Nolan.

The Advanced Trial Techniques Academy was developed and hosted by JL Academy, Jackson Lewis’ enterprise-wide, systematic approach to training and professional development.  JL Academy is based on a core value structure that attorneys practice “the JL way,” specifically defining performance standards and expectations.

“JL Academy is focused on developing the whole lawyer,” said Tammie Garner, Jackson Lewis’ Director of Professional Development. “We are investing in training to improve legal knowledge and practice, but also making sure we are developing the firm’s other core values: teamwork, client service and development, and firm contribution."

"Investing in upskilling is an investment in our attorneys,” added Garner. “In addition to benefiting the firm and our clients, training boosts morale and satisfaction. Our learning and development programming is designed to help our attorneys succeed at each level and every career stage. Jackson Lewis’ professional development system takes a holistic approach to identifying the skills needed to be a successful attorney and incorporates those expectations into frameworks for recruiting, onboarding, training and development, performance management and career management.”

“The Advanced Trial Techniques program was a win-win for our attorneys; it helped them sharpen skills that will benefit our clients while staying ahead of the curve by anticipating the impact of new technologies on the changing legal landscape,” she continued.
